Introduction
The Sago palm or Kanghi palm, also known as cycas revoluta, is one of the most intriguing and ancient member of the Cycadaceae family. Although this plant is commonly referred to as a palm, it is not classified as a true palm and has its origin in southern japan where it is widely admired for its elegant traditional look. The Sago palm due to its plume shaped, equally distributed leaves and slow growth pattern is highly used as an ornamental plant in interiors and exteriors of residential houses as well as in the gardens and the yards throughout the world.
Physical Description
Sago palm is a slow-growing plant and in the case of outdoors, it is able to reach around 3 meters (10 feet) tall although it remains smaller indoors. The trunk of Sago is straight, round in shape, rather wood-like, with a rough scaly exterior. Sago palm has spiny and dark green elongated leaves that are arranged in whorls and the length of each leaf is about 1.5 meters (5 feet) while the entire structure which is made up of several leaves can extend up to anwhose diameter can reach even 5 feet.
These leaflets are somewhat stiff in their disposition and are arranged in an arch thus augmenting the axis of the sago palm that is predominantly fanning leading to its high ornamental value. New growths come up in the form of a soft spiral limbs which later hardens and turns brown. Though a palm by common error, the sago palm is closely related to the prehistoric plants known as cycads which have remained structurally and growthwise unchanged for centuries.
Cultivation
Sago palms are very slow-growing plants but their maintenance is not as demanding compared to other plants and this has resulted in their extensive use in the gardens and indoors as well. They do well in very free draining materials and require little irrigation as they prefer dry conditions. The plant can withstand full sun exposure however the best sun tolerance is experienced in hot regions where there is some light shade. Young Sago Palms are drought resistant once established and can thrive even in poor soils without soils but will benefit from consistent fertilization – these palms will be more advantageous with fertilizers.
The most common technique for propagating the Sago palm is through the removal of “pups” or basal suckers. These suckers are small pieces that develop around the base of the trunk and may be removed and planted individually. This plant grows quite slowly, only producing a few new fronds per year, which makes it ideal for cramped areas and for being planted in pots.
Uses
The Sago Palm has a great pleasant appeal to the eye and its aesthetic value is the most perceived. Its unique and timeless appearance finds a lot of application in landscaping. It usually serves as a focal plant in many gardens and for a more tropical effect, can even be planted in clusters erect in a few places. Given its moderate height and a slower rate of doing so, it more often than not is also grown in containers or used as an indoor plant for the purpose of beautifying the space.
Sago Palm has been used in primitive cultures in many ways – however, caution must be taken in its use as some parts are poisonous if consumed.
Popularity and Distribution
Currently, the Sago Palm can be seen grown, around the world, in the tropics, subtropics, and in some cool temperate climatic zones. In warm temperate regions such as the USA, Australia and the Southeast Asia, this tree is usually grown as an ornamental garden plant. Its ability to grow with minimal care and its graceful appearance have made it quite popular for landscaping, into courtyards and in homes.
The Sago Palm is a beautiful and durable plant that adds an old-world charm to any place. Quite why this hardy perennial does not suffer from much growth, only requires little maintenance and is impressive in form makes it suitable for places both outdoors in the garden and even inside the house as a form. No matter used in big gardens, clustered in the resort or used as a pot, the Sago Palm is definitely appealing because of its ageless beauty and distinctiveness.
