Introduction
The family of Combretaceae incorporates more than seventy species of Terminalia whose uses are largely ornamental, therapeutic and commercial. Terminalia arjuna is probably the most popular among the exalted trees for it grows to tall heights, has ornamental value and possesses healing properties. Species of Terminalia occur predominantly in tropics and subtropics situated in the southern parts of Asia, Africa, and to certain degree Australia. In addition to crown cover and other benefits which they avial, these trees are widely used in the landscape, gardens, and roadways.
Unlike many other decorative trees, those of the genus Terminalia are grown more for their aesthetic and commercial importance. Several species, for instance Terminalia catappa (Indian Almond), are present in urban parks and cities due to their importance in urban greening and provision of shade. With a low canopy and wide ridged limbs that branch off and form a dense FRONCH foliage cover, this tree casts a nice overhead shade which is ideal in hot temperate regions as it offers respite from the warm weather.
Physical Description
Usually, a Terminalia tree is about 30 meters (approximately 100 feet) tall, with a broad and symmetrical crown. The trees appear to be in layers due to the horizontal branching pattern. Terminalia trees have broad, ovate, and shiny leaves, while species like Terminalia catappa considerably add to the foliage with colorful or even reddish-orange-yellow colored leaves before shedding. Therefore, this kind of tree adds an extra difference of season in the gardens.
The bark of different tree species is different in texture and color range however generally most tree barks are rough in texture and brownish grey in color. The tree known as Terminalia Arjuna has a varying bark texture which is prevalent in Ayurveda and need not be said its use aids the manufacturing of Ayurvedic drugs. Flowers are small, yellow or white, inconspicuous and often fruit appearing after the prominent types of the species. As an example the fruit of Terminalia bellirica is a round shaped grayish colored fruit unlike the fruit of Terminalia catappa which is similar to almond nut bearing edible fruits.
Cultivation and Growth
The Terminalia trees can be cultivated in two ways – by planting seeds or cuttings, though the usual process is sowing seeds. The plant grows in an environment containing deep and well drained soils and full exposure to sunlight but it can also grow in partial shading. Its characteristic ability to thrive in different soils including sandy or loamy soils makes it one of the best tree species to be planted in many areas.
The trees do grow at a reasonable rate and require minimal care once they have taken root. Very little moisture is needed but consistent watering, even during the dry seasons, helps particularly when the trees are still young. In some situations, adding some fertilizer around the tree enhances the health of the trees and subsequently this increases the growth rates. Terminalia species are hardy and their growth is not influenced entirely by the climatic conditions but they are however prone to cold weather particularly frost which may even kill young trunks and branches.
Uses
It can be seen as an advantage for the Terminalia genus that its members are able to grow in different environmental conditions. The wood obtained from this tree is tough and hard making it appropriate for building structures, making furniture, and even manufacturing agricultural implements. The wood got from the trees of the Terminalia species is widely exploited across the globe in creating buildings, kitchen utensils and artistic wood work.
Apart from its economic significance, the Terminalia tree has medicinal value. Bark of Terminalia arjuna, for example, is used extensively in alternative medicine due to its effectiveness in treating heart ailments and hypertension among other vascular disorders. Berries of both Terminalia bellirica and Terminalia chebula are quite pretty and are used in Ayurvedic medicines. Most notably in Triphala – an herbal powder used to detoxify and support the digestive system.
Certain Terminalia trees produce edible fruits that are consumed fresh or processed through hot pressing to obtain cooking oils among other uses. In the Indian Peninsular Coastal zones, the leaves and even the vegetative parts of the plant are sometimes collected for the extraction of tannin in the process of leather tanning.
Ornamental Value and Distribution
The Terminalia trees do exists in almost every tropical and subtropical regions such as India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia and Africa. Such trees are adapted to the environment owing to their wide cover and thick leaves and hence are used for tree selection in parks, gardens and even along roads providing not only shade but also beauty. This particular trees most often serves decorative functions in cities the oddest is that the branches seem to grow out for the comfort of pedestrians and people sitting inside the park.
Because of its ability to thrive in saline soils and its role in soil stabilization, Terminalia catappa is cultivated in numerous countries along the coasts. The tree has also a wide spread of branches and thick leaves which helps to shade the place and in turn reduces the heat around the tree.
The Terminalia tree is worth considering in landscaping as it has both functional and aesthetically pleasing qualities. Its edible fruits like those of the date or the coconut palms have not made the tree very famous all over the continents. Nevertheless, Its towering structure, dark green foliage, and much-needed roles in both the urban and rural set up makes it an attractive tree. There has never been a time in history that the tree as well as its relatives have been disregarded in cultivation, because whether for therapeutic or for construction purposes or even strictly for enhancing parks – the genus Terminalia has always been grown.
