Cashew or Kaju scientific name Anacardium Occidentale, is a legally protected species that produces cashew nuts and cashew apples. The tree is native to Brazil, but now it is grown in many tropic countries including India. Though, the tree can achieve a height of approximately 14 meters (46 feet) with a short, stocky trunk and a dense, spreading canopy. Its leaves are dark leathered green while flowers are small and sweet smelling. The primary structure is a thick fleshy pear shaped swollen part known as the cashew apple which has a rigid green covering surrounding it. The cashew is contained in the hard shell, often consumed roasted or salted as it is edible.
There are many advantages of cashew trees both to the environment as well as to the people. Some of these advantages of cashew trees are as follows:

2. Soil preparation: Prior to planting your tree, it is recommended to loosen the soil to a depth of at least 30 cm and add compost or well-rotted manure, to improve the quality and productivity of the soil.
3. Tree planting: Plant your tree at the same height as it was growing in the previous container or pot. After planting, thoroughly drench the tree in water and apply mulch around the base to promote moisture retention and control weed growth.
4. Regular watering is advised: Water your tree as per the requirement, more so when there are dry seasons, while ensuring that the soil does not become saturated nor bare.
5. Fertilising: Feed your tree with balanced plant food, such as 10-10-10 every month during the summer season’s growth period.
6. Cutting back: Cutting back should be done on your tree from time to time, in order to get rid of the excess, dead, broken or sick limbs and to assist in the formation of the tree.
7. Avoid pests: Watch out for pests like mealy bugs or scale and aphids which can be harmful to your tree. Whenever possible, avoid the use of pesticides and use natural methods like horticulture or neem oil for pest infestation treatment without affecting the environment.
